Olivier Père selects 10 best new filmmakers
An international mix of young, promising filmmakers to watch
Elegantly dressed with head held high, the image (above) of Meliha Vareshanovic crossing a road in Sarajevo became a symbol of the desire for the residents of that city to continue their everyday lives in the face of the siege that gripped and cut off the city between 1992 and 1996.
Now middle-aged, Vareshanovic is one of many Sarajevans who took part in a film collaboration, 1395 Days without Red, between Albanian artist Anri Sala and Sarajevo-born Šejla Kamerić. In it they recreate the lives they lived during the siege of the city.
The film actually comprises two, one-hour shorts after a disagreement between the artists led to them cutting their own versions. The effect of watching them back to back brings a curious disconnect to the experience, almost as if your memory is playing tricks on itself. After its success at both Locarno and Manchester film festivals it’s set to screen in London in a specially customised space in Victoria, London from September 29 to October 23.
