Following the announcement of his retirement from the stage in 2008, concert pianist Alfred Brendel has been concentrating on his second passion: poetry.
To coincide with Brendel's 80th birthday, Phaidon has published Playing the Human Game, Brendel's first and most comprehensive collection of poems in English (the translations, done in collaboration with leading scholar Richard Stokes, are set alongside their original German versions).
Phaidon.com joined Alfred Brendel and Richard Stokes for tea at Brendel's home at the end of 2010 to hear more about the inspiration for the poems and Brendel's personal favourite from the collection.
