Mannequins mingle with the visitors at Yohji Yamamoto's retrospective at the V&A
Colin McDowell finds colourful and cerebral clothes that veer from the seemingly casual to the monumental
Yohji Yamamoto is having a moment in London right now, as this gallery of highlights reveals.
Anyone who believes that Japanese dress comes only in black will be surprised and delighted by the brilliant colour of many of the 90 garments on display at the V&A in the exhibition dedicated to the work of Yohji Yamamoto (until 10 July).
The energy, colour, shapes and illusions that permeate this creative designer's work are being celebrated in a moment of Yamamoto mania in London. Making Waves, the impressive installation of Yamamoto's oversized white silk wedding dress is on show at The Wapping Project (until 14 July), while The Wapping Project Bankside hosts Yohji's Women, featuring iconic photographs of Yamamoto's designs by seven internationally-renowned photographers, including Max Vadukul and Nick Knight (until 14 May).
