Ian Berry's 'This is Whitechapel' returns to its origins
A new edition of the exhibition first shown in 1972 revisits London's East End
Ian Berry, returns to the Whitechapel Gallery (4.30pm, 4 September) to talk about his 60 year career as well as discuss the images produced by participants of a Magnum photography workshop, organised in conjunction with the gallery and lead by the British photographer himself, which will take place in the preceding week. The talk signifies the end of the extensive exhibition This is Whitechapel (until 4 September), which revisits Berry's 1972 project on London's East End which goes by the same name.
The Magnum photographer, renowned for his photographs of turbulent times in South Africa during the early 1960's and other conflict zones, was commissioned by the Whitechapel Gallery in 1972 to capture the East End at a pivotal moment in its history, at a time of rapid social and economic change - much like that which the area is experiencing today.
Alongside over 30 of Berry's photographs from his Whitechapel series are artist letters, films and books made by residents of the area throughout the 1970s. Particularly interesting is the inclusion of visitors' comments and photographs of people looking around the original This is Whitechapel exhibition.
