Fashion Photography: Guy Bourdin
The photographer whose fashion shoots exposed the true and unnerving nature of desire
Mario Testino’s portraits for Vogue and the other glossies and the many luxury advertising campaigns have earned him a place on the razor edge of fashion. His trademark style produces photographs that are usually highly polished – even the deceptive nonchalance of his memorable images for Gucci was only achieved by the most strenuous efforts on his part and those of his visual collaborators.
But fashion photography has an uncanny way of piercing to the heart of the moment. If a fashion photographer is therefore one who registers the enduring spirit of an instant, then these images - unpublished until they were brought together for his first book, Any Objections? - show that Testino continues to be a photographer of the moment and a fashion photography legend.
