Tomorrow (21 October) is the 21st anniversary of the first Apple Day, launched by the founders of Common Ground in the old Apple Market in London's Covent Garden.

Prompted by the loss of many of Britain's traditional orchards - and the 3,000 varieties of apples that had grown there - the organisation set out to create a calendar date to celebrate a versatile fruit that is as much bound up with vernacular heritage as it provides sustenance.

Having begun as one single date, Apple Day is now honoured at a variety of events throughout much of September and October across Britain  - and beyond: this year America's Big Apple hosted New York City Apple Day, which took place, of course, on Orchard Street.
